The Charlottesville City Museum encourages the interaction of people of all ages through a unique combination of restaurants, urban gardens, and a museum with exhibits inspired by popular Charlottesville sites. The Charlottesville downtown mall is primarily focused along East Main Street, and a majority of the sources of entertainment are located along this street. The City Museum will spread the footprint of the downtown mall to Market Street, drawing in parts of the city that can go unnoticed, such as the Market Street Park. The Charlottesville City Museum provides a space for young children and encourages the interaction and participation of all ages. The museum portion consists of multiple stories of climbing structures inspired by local downtown, suburban, and rural sites. As the museum gets taller, the building becomes less dense, allowing for more open outdoor spaces with gardens, similar to the change in building density and outdoor spaces from downtown to rural areas. The climbing structures and theater space on the first three floors are inspired by downtown sites, such as the the Sprint Pavilion and the market. The middle two floors represent the surrounding suburbs. There is a construction exhibit for kids to build playhouses and a roller-skating rink. The top three floors incorporate popular rural sites, such as a corn maze and rock climbing. The restaurants are separated from the museum by green spaces and a gap in the building to encourage people to visit the site without having to visit the museum. There are several connecting passages and green spaces to allow for easy access and a flow between the programs. The spaces and programs of the Charlottesville City Museum activate a different part of downtown Charlottesville and create a new gathering space for everyone.
